Rocktin Grove Bio:
The music we make stems from the great friendships we have. The seven of us were all destined for different paths, but through music we arrived at Rocktin Grove. Building from a love for funk, bluegrass, indie rock, classical, and world styles, Rocktin Grove’s sound is a tasteful blend. Smooth fades, euphoric builds, infectious grooves, and soulful harmonies mix to form music that sweeps you away.
Also interested in sustainable agriculture, the seven of us believe music and community action can help improve and empower our world. Calling Boulder, Colorado our home, the mountains, beautiful blue sky, and deep powder keep us loving life and loving music.

- Mad Dog and the Smokin' J's
- 8:00 pm
-
- With over 400 shows and 3 releases since their formation in 2009, Mad Dog and the Smokin' Js have established themselves as one of the hardest working bands in Colorado. Included in the onslaught of travel are 6 US tours and a European tour. High-energy delivery and powerful songwriting propel the power trio's reputation as a premier Denver based roots rock band. Be sure to check out MDSJ's forth release "Wired and Tired" (15¢/HighFive! Records) on Dec. 1st 2011.
MDSJ have appeared at festivals, such as Hog Rock River Rally, Vail Octoberfest, Sturgis Bike Week, Viva Las Vegas, and Snowdaze. MDJS have played with O.A.R., Reverend Horton Heat, Black Oak Arkansas, Gallagher, Randy McAlister, Hazel Miller, Confederate Railroad, The Chop Tops, The Dusty 45's, Three Bad Jacks, Mad Max & the Wild Ones, Fang, Commander Cody, Hillbilly Hellcats, and The Railbenders.
Mad Dog and the Smokin' Js was founded in Denver, Colorado by drummer Mike 'Mad Dog' Minnick in late 2008. Minnick, intending to shape a high energy roots rock'n'roll sound, found the help of guitarist and singer Joe Clark and bass player Jay Shewman. Although short lived, the original trio dropped MDSJ's first release on ¢15/Hi-Five! Records, "Live @ 7680'", which combined powerful modern rock riffs with rockabilly and honky-tonk to create a unique taste to the Colorado roots scene. Upon the departure of Shewman in mid 2009, Mad Dog called on the assistance of current bassist and vocalist Johnny Kongo and continued to set out on MDSJ's first tour in late 2009. Early 2010 saw MDSJ's second release "Fuel for the Fire" (¢15/Hi-Five! Records), and was followed by the bands first West Coast tour. Guitarist Clark left the band in late 2010 and MDSJ set out on their second west coast tour with Denver Guitarist Norm 'Jeffro' Frazier. After 151 shows in 2010, the band introduced their third release, "Live" (¢15/Hi-Five! Records), in early 2011 on the cusp of a vigorous 3 month tour that included the west/mid-west U.S. and Europe. The band found good success with the release which drifted away from the power rock to a more surf roots and rockabilly sound. This sound was further enhanced with the appointment of but seemed cut short with the leave of Frazier, but lead to the acquisition of current guitarist and singer Jay Nasty. The band is currently awaiting release of their forth record, "Wired and Tired" (15¢/HighFive Records) on Dec. 1st 2011.

****SPECIAL EVENT ****
To be rescheduled as soon as Willie is feeling better!

Willie Houston
Louisiana Delta Bluesman

and SPECIAL EVENT
Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Willie by the
Colorado Blues Society during his show!
http://www.WillieHouston.com
A Life in the blues, best describes 84 -year old Louisiana delta blues man Willie Houston. Willie was born to perform and his life-long love of the blues has never faltered. From his humble beginnings in the delta cotton fields to the blues stages of America, the blues have been a way of life for Willie Houston.
We are pleased and excited that Willie calls Colorado his home. Willie has played his delta blues in thousands of juke joints, clubs, bars, and event halls for more than 60-years.
With the release of his 2001 CD "Bluesman Willie Houston" he has a newfound popularity that has opened many ears to this grand electric delta style of an art form that has a very limited number of surviving alumni.
It is well known that for every bluesman like BB King, John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters there were literally hundreds of delta bluesmen from that same era that didn't go to Memphis or Chicago. They were never heard by the likes of Alan Lomax or had a chance to record for the Library of Congress.
So goes the story of Willie Houston. Now at long last Willie Houston's time has come. With his self-titled CD on the Fasttrack label he has attracted attention from radio stations, newspapers and blues fans alike. If afforded the opportunity you simply must see, "Bluesman" Willie Houston.

Steve Mignano's
Reverend Hooch
9pm ~ 1am
$5 Cover
http://www.RevHooch.com
The last couple years have seen Denver-based blues rockers Rev Hooch scratching out a solid reputation up and down the front range of Colorado by virtue of the band's excellent command of the time worn blues classics. Fronted by 27 year old Steve Mignano and backed up by rhythm section veterans David Brenowitz (drums) and Roc Eubanks (bass), Rev Hooch injects much needed new blood and young fans into a musical scene that oftentimes has more in common with graying baby boomers than today's 20 and 30 somethings.
But the difference between a great blues cover band and the blues rock greats such as Clapton, Cray, and SRV among others is the quality and delivery of a band's original songs. Do Rev Hooch's original songs stack up? Well, if the advance single from the band's upcoming debut album is any indication, I'd say the future looks pretty damn good.
Combining simple yet memorable lyrics, muscular guitar riffs, and thundering bass and drums that sound like they were borrowed off a heavy metal album, 'Grey Sky' looks to breathe new life into the blues rock genre. The Hooch brings out a massive dose of southern fried rock and roll that leaves many of the dusty blues music cliches far behind.

Denver's Best Blues Jam
Ziggies ~ Best Blues Jam 2011
Best Blues Jam - 2011
While Ziggie's has long been hailed as Denver's oldest blues bar, in recent years it's expanded into other genres, such as rock, R&B and funk. In addition to an acoustic open-mike night on Mondays, an open jam on Tuesdays and a chance to sit in with featured musicians on Wednesdays, Ziggie's also boasts one of the longest-running blues jams in town on Sundays. And that's where the real action is. The Doc Brown Blues Band and the Blues Allstars alternate hosting the blues jams, which bring in a variety of solid musicians playing covers and originals. Keyboard players need not worry about bringing down a keyboard; the bar has one available for the jams, which kick off at 7 p.m.
Westword, March 31-April 6, 2011, Volume 34, Number 31, Page 98

Ziggies ~ Best Blues Jam 2009
Ziggie's has always been known as Denver's oldest blues bar, but ...Carla Jordan, who took over the place and remodeled it just over a year ago, have expanded the music selection by also bringing in R&B, funk, rock and jazz acts on Fridays and Saturdays. The other five nights are allotted to open mikes, alternately hosted by Doc Brown's Blues Band, Jasco from Mojambus, the Mike Maurer Band or Papa Juke. Whether you want to hone your chops with some stellar blues talent or just listen, Ziggie's is the place. And there's never a cover.
Ziggies is The Oldest Blues Bar in Denver & in Colorado...with a keen focus on live music, we have more than blues... we have R&B, groove, funk, new jazz, motown, swing, rock... and even a "Performance Poetry" night twice a month.
Ziggies has been afforded the great opportunity to present some of the best live local bands as well as regional, national, and even international touring acts.
No Cover Charge Sunday through Wednesday and the bands set the cover charge Thursday, Friday, & Saturday.
We've been told that this very well may be the longest standing Open Blues Jam in Denver and likely Colorado!
