- Melanie is originally from Great Falls, Montana, but has been in Denver since 1986. She has truly enjoyed growing up in and along side the Denver arts scene (as well as working every possible kind of customer service job available in order to pay the bills while doing so). She studied Theater at the University of Denver, spent some time in France at the University of Paris VIII and jumped into the Denver theatre scene in 1998. She is still involved in the theatre scene by way or her original holiday show, BALLS! A Holiday Spectacular, that will be re-written and performed again this year with Mare Trevathan and GerRee Hinshaw in December at Curious Theatre Company. In 2000, she joined the Slam Poetry scene for a while and found her love of writing. Somewhere along the line, she picked up a guitar and started songwriting seriously and going to open mics. In 2007 she met her songwriting partner, Emily Saunar, and began the acoustic rock duo, middleroad, who can be seen regularly in Denver. In 2010 she met John Weeks, blues guitar extraordinaire, who jokingly called her "Queen of the Blues" one night at an open mic. Little did she know that she would find her true voice there, deep in the Blues. They soon formed the band project that became Cedar Avenue Blues Band, and they continue as blues-writing partners and performers joined by Jay Ryan on bass and Ryan Kurtz on drums. A self-proclaimed open-mic whore, she hosted her own open mic at The White Owl May 2010-April 2011, and still bounces around to blues jams and open mics a few times a week.

- Ziggies First Annual Poetry Fest
!!! THIS WEEK !!!
August 12, 13, 14 ~ 2011
Ziggies, while known as the Oldest Blues Bar in Colorado, has recently opened our doors to poetry every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month. With the great response from our poetry community we are proud to open our doors for the first annual Ziggies Poetry Fest.
Featured poets, workshops, pairing, performances, and live music!
All inclusive pass: $60 includes 5 workshops (presented by poets & musicians) , Open Mic, Art Compost and the Word Mechanics, 3 Nightly Poetry Performances, Randall Dubis Show Friday (Aug. 12), Doc Brown's Blues Band Show Saturday (Aug. 13), Coyote Poets of the Universe show Sunday (Aug. 14) and Continental Breakfast Sunday.

Poetry Gap
Jef Otte
Writing poetry and performing it are two different things, observes longtime local poet Julie Cummings — and with Denver’s unqualified success in the slam poetry world (both major Denver teams just went to the nationals), it pays to be well versed in the latter. To that end, the Ziggies Poetry Fest Cummings is organizing is a great place not only to see poets perform, but to learn how to do it yourself.
The idea came as an offshoot of an early-evening poetry open-mike night Cummings has been doing at Ziggies for some time, a night that allowed her to preserve her day job (teaching) by being “done by 7:30 and in bed.” But in the vacuum left in recent years by the death of two prominent Colorado poetry festivals — Sparrows, in Salida, and Talking Gourds, in Telluride — Cummings saw a niche to fill. “The first time I went to Sparrows, I wanted to be better at performing poetry,” she recalls. “That’s what I want this festival to do. There will be a lot of performance, but I think the workshops are the real meat of it.”
There are seven workshops altogether, on topics that range from word choice to channeling feminine energy, and while admission is a cool $60, it includes access to everything. Festivities kick off Friday, August 12 at 1:30 p.m., with a workshop on sounds of the English language, and continue through Sunday at Ziggies, 4923 West 38th Avenue. 11 A.M. POEMS OF PRAISE, POEMS OF PASSION; To Dwell in Delight. Debbi Kapp Brody $5
As most creative people, it is easy for poets to fall into writing from gravitas. In this workshop, we will rise up and write from the joy of walking on the sunny side of Poetry Street. All levels of experience with any kind of writing or none at all are welcome to this fun and lightening-of-the-heart workshop.
11 A.M. Found Poems! Play that Makes Poetry Kathryn T.S. Bass $5
Though poetry is no game, there's plenty of playful ways to trigger great work. Join me for a series of exercises designed to jumpstart new pieces and galvanize unexpected connections. You'll feel like you just played a few parlor games with some friends, but walk away with fresh, juicy lines—or maybe even whole poems—in your pocket!
1:30 P.M. Unlocking the Anima Energy Within: A Poetry Writing Workshop with Anita Jepson-Gilbert $5
Psychologist Carl Jung has described the Anima as that Feminine energy, which both men and women can tap into if they're willing to step out of their controlling consciousness and into the unconscious realm of the imagination. During the workshop we will attempt to get in touch with the collective unconsciousness among us and to allow the Anima to reveal the hidden truths behind our words. If you're planning to attend this workshop, please start now to jot down any dream images you can remember from your dreams, and bring them with you.
1:30 P.M. Workshop with Celeste Labadie $5 Join Celeste in an amazing workshop featuring words and writing.
"Poetry: Receiving What We Need"
Poetry allows presence to greet us whenever we choose it.
Paying attention to both beauty and struggle, the poet questions and listens simultaneously.
Using music, movement and our voices, we will step into a space of wonder and freedom.
Like the child and the elder, we will explore on paper the whispers of truth that comfort us.
You just may receive (explore, expand, let go, dissolve) and welcome what you most need.
